IVF Step 1 – You’re Starting IVF!
IVF stands for in vitro fertilization. In intrauterine insemination (IUI), prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus so that fertilization can occur inside the woman’s body. With IVF, fertilization takes place outside the body.Mature eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and combined with collected sperm in a laboratory. After fertilization, the embryos are cultured for about 2–6 days and then transferred into the uterus to help achieve pregnancy.If several embryos are created or an immediate embryo transfer is not possible, the remaining embryos can be frozen for future use. Transferring a previously frozen and then thawed embryo is also part of IVF treatment.
