All About Menstruation

Period's Over! Welcome to the Follicular Phase

Your period is finally over for this month! Even though it happens every month, it often brings a sense of relief. After menstruation ends, the follicular phase begins. During this phase, the follicles that contain eggs start to grow. From the uterus's perspective, the endometrial lining that was shed during menstruation begins to rebuild and thicken again, which is why this stage is also called the proliferative phase. The follicular phase lasts from the first day of menstruation until ovulation. On average, it lasts about 10–14 days. During this time, estrogen produced by the growing follicles helps thicken the uterine lining. However, if the ovaries do not properly develop follicles, the follicular phase may become unusually long. On the other hand, if ovarian function declines, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels may rise excessively, causing the follicular phase to become shorter. Both situations can reduce fertility. In particular, if your menstrual cycle becomes progressively shorter due to declining ovarian function, it is recommended that you consult a healthcare professional.
